The Preliminary course is an intensive training course for modern dance and classical ballet for young dancers in preparation for a dance subject training at a dance academy like Codarts Rotterdam, Theaterschool Amsterdam, ArtEZ Arnhem, Fontys Tilburg and Royal Conservatory of The Hague or an MBO dance.

>Admission to the Preliminary course takes place after the successful completion of an audition. Admission criteria are physical aptitude, pleasure / passion, dance qualities (including appearance, musicality, co-ordination) and motivation.
> The students follow 4 days a week lesson, total 7 hours. Of which ± 3 hours classical ballet, modern dance (Graham based, Cunningham, floorwork), improvisation / composition, choreography. A few times a year a supportive lesson from e.g. a physiotherapist, dietician, mental coach.
> The students perform a lot to gain stage experience, such as our performances in December and June.
> We prepare the students to audition for a dance vocational training.
> Regular classes are organized so parents and other interested parties can see the progress.
> 3x per season, the students get a review, An assessment of your progress is made three times a year. This is done both verbally and in writing.
> The open days of the national dance academies are visited together.




Program

Which classes are you going to do?
• Classical ballet, Vaganova method
• Modern dance (including Graham based, Floorwork, Horton, Limon and Cunningham)
• Modern Jazz
• Improvisation and composition
• Choreography
• From class 5 to 10: Dance and health (including yoga, Pilates, nutrition, injury prevention)
• From grades 5 to 10: Supportive lessons, such as Drama, Self-confidence, preparation for auditions, info about professional practice

Stage experience

A lot of time is spent on gaining stage experience in the following way:
• You learn to make a dance (solo) for the Own Work Performance
• You dance in a piece during the big performance of the Danshuis or the older dancers (from class 5) of a professional choreographer during the dance workshop performances or in collaboration with Dance group Haarlem
• You participate in the annual 'Open Day Talent Development', by means of: public lessons and short performances

The Preparatory Course is regularly approached by cultural parties in Haarlem and the surrounding area to make a dance contribution to, for example, an event, an opera or concert.

Other activities
• Visiting dance performances together
• Visiting the Open Days of the national dance academies

Evaluation
An evaluation of your progress will be made several times a year. This is done both orally and in writing.


Class 1 and 2 (8-10 years)
> The children who dance in class 1 and 2 have classes together and follow 2 classes a week, namely 1x classical ballet and 1x modern / improvisation.
> We prepare interested children for auditioning for a dance academie.
> The children receive written and oral feedback once a year.

 

Class 3 and 4 (10-12 years)
> The children in class 3 and 4 have classes together and are required to attend 3 classes a week. Until Christmas that means 2 classical ballet lessons per week and 1x improvisation/composition. From January that will be 1 classical ballet class, 1x modern dance and 1x improv/compo/choreography.
> We prepare the children for an audition for a national dance academie or class 5 of the Preparatory Course of Danshuis Haarlem.
> The children receive a rating twice per season.
> In consultation we go to the Open Day of a Dance preparatory course (eg National Ballet Academy in Amsterdam, Codarts in Rotterdam).

 

Class 5 to 10 (12-18 years)

> The students attend classes several days a week, a total of 6 hours on average. The lessons consist of classical ballet, modern dance (Graham based, Cunningham, Limon, floorwork), improvisation/composition, choreography.

> Students are assessed twice a year.

> In addition to the weekly lessons, the dancers receive a supporting lesson a few times a year from, for example, a physiotherapist, dietician, mental coach, information professional practice, etc.






Auditions


Classes 1 to 10 present themselves and all information is given about the lessons and auditions. A great way to get acquainted with this special program for children and young people with a great passion and talent for dance!
