Teacher Modern / Horton Technique
I am now in my final year of the Bachelor of Dance in Education program at the Rotterdam Dance Academy Codarts. Before I started this training I lived in New York for 6 months, where I got to know the American modern dance style Horton. In the fall of 2011 I went back to New York to deepen myself in the Horton technique and to follow many lessons from Milton Myers and Karen Gayle.
The Horton Technique is an American modern dance style developed by Lester Horton, who inspired Alvin Ailey in almost all his masterpieces. In this style you develop strength, coordination and flexibility and enable free expression. The technique has a huge variation in rhythm and is often danced on percussion music. The lesson has a fixed structure with its own vocabulary in the warm up and ends with a combination.
Besides Horton I dance classical ballet, contemporary and lyrical jazz, street dance and show. In New York I followed a lot of lessons in these styles at Alvin Ailey school, Perry Dance, Broadway Dance Center and Steps on Broadway and this was fantastic. I also danced in New York in the piece 'Wishing well' by Karen Gayle in the Ailey theater.
