Parent / Toddler
In a very playful way, the toddler, together with a (grand) parent or caretaker, acquire knowledge of the basic principles of dance, such as body awareness, musicality and dance formation. Because the parent takes part, there is a safe atmosphere and the child is encouraged and invited to move wonderfully. With the help of songs, attributes and inspirational music, the children are dancing amongst the stars for 45 minutes!

Toddlers 3-4
In a very playful way, the toddlers make a start with the basic principles of Dance, such as body awareness, musicality and dance formation. With the help of songs, attributes and inspirational music, the children are dancing amongst the stars for 45 minutes! The children finish their course with a small presentation.

Preschoolers 4-6
In the children classes (4 - 6 years) much attention is paid to improvisation and general dance formation. Facets like musicality, body awareness and space use are introduced in a playful way. At the end of the season, the children participate in a great performance in the Stadsschouwburg in Haarlem.

Pre-ballet

Classical Ballet / modern dance
The Danshuis offers combination lessons of classical ballet and modern dance. The lesson starts with about half an hour of classical ballet technique and then dances from the modern dance technique. A great lesson for children who like to work on their technique, but who also like to dance freely. During the modern dance part, improvisation is also used, so that the children can fully express their own creativity and develop it further. Please note: all dancers aged 10-18 years are required to take at least 2 lessons per week.

Modern / Jazz
Modern dance is built on a solid technique, in which body awareness, strength, gravity and many skills of dance will be worked on. Moreover, it is a theatrical style with room for the student's own creativity. We work with various techniques, such as Floorwork and Cunningham, but there is also a lot of room for improvisation. Dancing on the ground, moving throughout the hall to tasty, beautiful and surprising music from all over the world!
At the Danshuis, the modern classes are often combined with Jazz dance. This expressive style originated in North America with influences from African dance and jazz music and has many specializations, from show jazz to modern jazz. The Urban styles later also emerged from Jazz dance. Both styles are offerd during the mix lessons. On Sundays various workshops and short courses modern and / or jazz are organized by various (guest) teachers. More info will follow. Please note: all dancers aged 10-18 are required to attend a minimum of 2 classes per week.

Classical ballet
Teacher Rimke gives 2 classical lessons on Friday for young people from 12 years old. Dancers from the age of 16 and adults with an advanced level can follow the lessons of Nicolas or Haya. The classical ballet lessons are given according to the Russian Vaganova method. With this method you work on building up a strong technique (strength and balance), but at the same time it is also a very dancing method. You become aware of your posture, work on flexibility and strength and develop your dancing qualities and grace.

Modern Dance
Danshuis Haarlem specializes in modern dance classes. Both the more 'classic' modern styles, such as Cunningham and Graham, as well as the contemporary styles, such as Modern Floorwork, can be practiced in the Danshuis. There are classes for beginners to advanced for children from 8 years old, young people and adults. Teacher Rimke combines modern dance with classical ballet (see 'classical / modern') and Jazz. Susan offers a mix of modern and Floorwork. Advanced dancers are invited to join the short courses and workshops on Sunday.

Jazzdance
Rimke teaches Jazz on Mondays for (semi) advanced dancers from 14 years old. Jazz has its roots in Africa, is rhythmic, challenging and requires an expressive attitude. Within the lessons, Rimke works on specific jazz techniques, musicality and use of space.
For adults, Modern Jazz, a more academic form of Jazz, is taught on Mondays and Thursdays.

++ lessons
After a successful pilot last season, we will continue with the ++ lessons we offer in every style: Jazz++, modern++ and classical++. These lessons are intended for young people of children aged 8 and 9 (modern++) and youngsters 12-16 years who want to delve more into the technique of the different styles and who prefer a more serious work style. The lessons are therefore not necessarily more complicated than the regular lessons, but more precision is required from the dancers. Good technique makes a better dancer. Basic skills such as balance, turning and jumping will work better if your technique is more developed. This offer fits in nicely with the ambition of the Danshuis to approach dance as a craft and performing art.
Admission to these classes is in consultation with the teachers. Anyone who is interested can come and do a trial lesson.
We recommend dancers of the Production Group to take at least 1 ++ class per week in a style of their own choosing.

Improvisation / Composition
Improvisation is an essential part of the dance making process. It is also a great way to develop the dancer's individuality and to research new forms of movement. We find this uniqueness important at the Danshuis, which is why we pay attention to Improvisation during all classes. On Sundays a short course will be offered regularly, with attention also being paid to contact improvisation and composition. These classes can also be used to work on projects and performances.

2 or 3 Styles
Sometimes you can't choose or you like multiple styles.... Maybe you want to discover a new style. At the Danshuis, adults can follow a seasonal course in which 2 or 3 different dance styles are offered. It can be a mix of Classical, Modern or Jazz.
More info about the styles: Classical ballet is great for building up or improving your basic technique (posture, body awareness, coordination, strength and balance). In modern dance you can use your empathy and start moving. Jazz invites you to go all out and swing! The level of the lessons: level 1 (beginners), level 2 (intermediate) and level 3 (advanced).

Production group
After a successful first season, we will continue with the production group for young people from 13 years old. This group is especially for dancers who want to immerse themselves in dance making, who want to work hard and perform more often. You will be admitted after doing an audition or an admission lesson. In addition to dancing in this group, the dancers also attend at least 2 technique lessons per week.
